Picture This (Mack Dawg) - dvd review

Riders: Seth Huot, Andreas Wiig, Wille Yli-Luoma, Darrell Mathes, DCP, Etienne Gilbert, Hampus Mosesson, Shaun White, Kevin Pearce, Jussi Oksanen, Eero Ettala, Heikki Sorsa, Aaron Biittner, JP Walker.

Mack Dawg are the kings of the skateboard style snowboard movie and so their dvds are often, for want of a better word, traditional. Yet Picture This is without doubt the pick of the crop this year.

It not only contains the most progressive tricks I’ve seen in some time but they always manage to find the most creative ways to film them in. So no surprise that the same set ups appear again and again. Last year was one of the worst for snow in living memory if you listen to the pros.

"it’s been a good season to experiment with different types of filming and snowboarding"

The irreproachable Jeremy Jones puts it best. “This season’s been hard for bangers… but it’s been a good season to experiment with different types of filming and snowboarding..”

Well here’s the proof. When reviewing I try capture frames from the movie to show you a flavour of the tricks but every time I thought I’d picked something brilliant, there was always something even better a minute later. In the end I had to stop otherwise I was going to produce a flick book.

Forget the first time you saw a road gap jump, check out newbie Darrell Mathes’ transfer over a man made canyon or at the opposite end of the scale but equally impressive, how about Jussi Oksanen turning an old tube into an impromptu rail? Or Aaron Bittner’s wall ride to wall ride.

"the last time I saw anyone pull a spine transfer like that it was on my Xbox"

Best trick? That is a tough call in a movie that continually tops itself on so many levels. I liked Heikki Sorsa’s one footed spine transfer. Heikki may well be an Olympic half pipe finalist but that the last time I saw anyone pull a spine transfer like that it was on a skateboard … on my Xbox.

Picture This is the movie that hi def and rewind were invented for. The tricks are at times so incredible that they beg to be watched over and over, almost frame by frame. Quite simply the most impressive jibbing movie since Afterbang.
